Lord’s Taverners South Africa with Sporting Chance Development Foundation

Our Table Cricket schools only reopened in mid-January, and the majority of them will only resume extracurricular activities in February. As a result, we have had limited opportunities to conduct sessions this month. However, we are prepared to restart our full programme as soon as schools can accommodate us.

We have actively continued promoting the game and are excited to continue introducing Jan Kriel School in Kuilsriver to the programme. Their learners have eagerly engaged in training sessions, and we are encouraged by their enthusiasm for the sport.

We have secured a meeting with the City of Cape Town in February, where Table Cricket will be a key discussion point. This engagement is part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen support for Table Cricket and explore opportunities for growth and collaboration.

As schools fully resume their activities, we are gearing up to continue our coaching sessions and inter-school matches. These sessions will help refine skills, encourage friendly competition, and build excitement for our much-anticipated Table Cricket Festivals.

Mpumelelo Project

Bulela Klaas’s first days at Bishops

Our first scholarship holder, Bulela Klaas, started off very well at Bishops by playing some warm-up matches from the 6th of January against Wynberg Boys, Pretoria High, Paarl Gym to name a new and as expected, he did very well with the ball by taking no less than two wickets per game. On the 12th of January he went to the sport physio for 40 minutes for an injury prevention session. On the 13th and 14th, he went to the school shop to fit his school uniform and was allocated his books and a laptop. Bulela also moved into his new boarding house called the “Founders” where he will be based for the year.

On the 15th Bulela wore his new Bishops uniform with pride and a smile as he attended his first lessons with his new classmates. His joy was clearly visible in his face. After a full two weeks at Bishops, Bulela is still amazed by how big the school is and how the culture of brotherhood is alive with almost every learner at the school.

SACS trials visit

Our boys were invited to attend trials at SACS on the 19th of January which they really enjoyed and from the feedback received from our coordinators, the SACS coaches were particularly impressed by our players, in particular Alakhe Gona, David Gowe, Vuyayo Buti and Ave Nkantini. We will provide further feedback on the next steps in the next edition of Sporting Spirit.

We are also delighted to introduce coach Mzwethu and in the next edition of Sporting Spirit we will bring you his remarkable story of achievement in the face of adversity.
