The visual impact of the Psychotria capensis is striking. It is a small tree with shiny dark green leaves and stunning yellow flowers from spring to January.
The flowers are followed by red to black fruits which are loved by a variety of birds. Another flower that makes a visual impact at the ULRG at this time of the year is Albuca nelsonii. It has enormous spikes of white-striped green flowers about a meter high.
You don’t often see these plants in private gardens. The other redeeming feature of these plants is that they grow in the shade and we have quite a lot of shade at the ULRG now that our trees are thriving.
Gymnospora buxiolia is also a stunning small tree that is covered with clusters of white flowers but regrettably they have an unpleasant foetid smell. The smell attracts insects which in turn are eaten by insect-eating birds so the smell is not ‘all bad’! We look forward to a beautiful and prosperous year ahead in the garden.
