Lord’s Taverners South Africa plays a crucial role in empowering disabled and disadvantaged children through sports, particularly cricket. Our mission is to ensure that every young person has access to play, regardless of their background or ability. By donating to this cause, individuals can help provide essential equipment and opportunities that bring joy through playing sport. The organisation emphasises that sport can transform lives, boosting self-esteem, health, and educational prospects for these young heroes.
Table cricket serves not only as a competitive sport but also as a vital tool for personal development and social integration among disabled youth. With ongoing support from initiatives like the Mpumelelo Project and organisations such as Lord’s Taverners South Africa, there are promising pathways ahead for young athletes eager to embrace their potential through cricket.
What is Table Cricket?
Table cricket is an innovative adaptation of the traditional game of cricket, specifically designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. Played on a table tennis table, this engaging sport allows teams of six players to participate in a competitive yet inclusive environment.
How Table Cricket Works
In table cricket, teams take turns to bowl and bat. The bowler uses a ramp to deliver the ball, which can either be a standard ball that runs true or a weighted one that swings unpredictably. The batter’s objective is to hit the ball into various scoring zones located around the table while skilfully avoiding the fielders, who are strategically positioned to block runs and potentially get the batter out. Each scoring zone offers different point values, adding an element of strategy as players decide where to aim their shots.
This format not only maintains the essence of cricket but also enhances coordination and cognitive skills among participants. As players engage in this team sport, they develop important social skills and teamwork abilities, fostering a sense of community and belonging.
The Mpumelelo Project – an exciting launch
Recently, the Mpumelelo Project was launched by Sport Skills 4 Life Skills (SS4LS) in partnership with the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA). This initiative aims to enhance cricket skills while providing academic and career support to youth in Cape Town’s townships. Now some way into its implementation, the project has received significant backing from Lord’s Taverners South Africa, ensuring its success as it progresses into the summer season and beyond. The collaboration is set to create exciting opportunities for young athletes in the region.
Celebrating Young Talent
In addition to fostering new talent through initiatives like the Mpumelelo Project, there have been notable achievements in youth cricket. For instance, Diocesan College (Bishops) has awarded a scholarship to Bulela Klaas for his upcoming grade eight year in 2025. Recognised for his exceptional pace as a fast bowler, Bulela is poised to thrive in the supportive environment at Bishops. This achievement not only highlights his potential, but also reflects the commitment of Lord’s Taverners to nurture young talent in cricket.
