Education - nurturing the leaders of tomorrow

The Spirit Education Foundation (SEF) remains committed to providing quality education and mentorship to scholars. During the past quarter, we celebrated outstanding academic achievements, with our Grade 12 cohort achieving a 100% bachelor pass rate. The implementation of a structured mentorship programme has enhanced scholar development, equipping students with critical life skills and career guidance. Furthermore, targeted fundraising efforts have led to the successful establishment of an alumni support network, ensuring long-term engagement with past scholars and future donors.

Community development - strengthening partnerships for inclusive growth

Through the Spirit Community Foundation (SCF), we have continued to nurture and encourage existing and new partnerships that create sustainable change.

Key highlights include:

1. League of Friends of the Blind (LOFOB): Expanded outreach efforts, providing essential therapeutic and educational support to visually impaired children.
2. HearInAfrica: Free audiological screenings reached over 600 individuals, with hearing aid fittings ensuring improved quality of life.
3. Upper Liesbeek River Garden (ULRG): Ongoing riverbank stabilisation projects and educational tours have promoted ecological awareness and conservation efforts.
4. The Big Issue: Vendor support programmes saw increased engagement, with impactful workshops on financial literacy and skills development.
5. Lord’s Taverners: The expansion of the Table Cricket initiative has enabled more children with disabilities to participate in structured sporting activities.

These collaborations underline our commitment to encouraging an inclusive development focus while uplifting underserved communities through well-placed interventions.

Wildlife conservation - preserving and protecting our natural heritage

The Spirit Wildlife Foundation (SWF) continues its critical work in conservation. Over the last quarter, significant progress was made in protecting endangered species, particularly through our partnership with Care for Wild.

Key achievements include:

1. The successful rehabilitation and release of rhinos into protected environments.
2. Ongoing monitoring of species within Spirit Bomas, ensuring their well-being and reintegration into the wild.
3. Enhanced engagement with conservation stakeholders to drive awareness and secure additional funding for preservation initiatives.
4. Our conservation efforts remain a cornerstone of our broader mission, ensuring that future generations inherit a thriving and biodiverse environment.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) - building strong foundations

The Spirit Foundation’s Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, Kapteintjies and Bonnie People ECD, continue to provide quality early education and support to young learners.

Recent achievements include:

1. Successful year-end graduation ceremonies, celebrating the transition of 63 children into Grade R for 2025.
2. Ongoing professional development workshops for educators, ensuring high teaching standards and improved classroom experiences.
3. Infrastructure upgrades, including security enhancements, new learning materials, and additional classroom space to accommodate more learners.
4. Strengthened relationships with Breede Rivier Hospice to provide regular health check-ups and medical support for children and staff.
5. A 90% retention rate for returning students, demonstrating the positive impact of our structured learning programmes.

 Our ECD centres remain committed to nurturing young minds by providing a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate environment that lays the foundation for lifelong learning.

Spirit International Football Academy (SIFA) - developing future athletes

The Spirit International Football Academy (SIFA) has made significant strides by welcoming its first intake in January 2025. The leg work that went into Q4 of 2024 has made it possible for the coaches and management team to hit the floor running in 2025.

Recent highlights include:

1. Completion of player assessments and the recruitment of top young athletes for the upcoming season.
2. Successful delivery of high-quality training sessions, incorporating both technical skills and personal development.
3. Establishment of key partnerships with international football academies and creating pathways for promising and aspirational young players.
4. Procurement and distribution of essential training kits and equipment ensuring players are well-prepared for competition.
5. Strategic engagements with donors and sponsors to secure long-term support for the academy's continued growth.
6. SIFA remains dedicated to nurturing young athletes, providing them with world-class training opportunities, and positioning them for success both on and off the field.

Key focus areas heading into 2025 include:

1. Strengthening our fundraising strategies to expand donor engagement and long-term sustainability.
2. Scaling our mentorship programmes within SEF to further enhance learner success.
3. Expanding community outreach through SCF initiatives, ensuring continued support for our partner organisations.
4. Advancing conservation efforts through SWF by integrating technology-driven monitoring and increased stakeholder collaboration.
